The Philippine Department of Tourism has recently announced its intention to target the Middle East market and promote the country as a medical and wellness destination. While the Philippines has traditionally been associated with recreational tourism due to its beautiful beaches and diving spots, the country is now seeking to tap into the health tourism sector as well. With the government making policy adjustments to create a climate conducive to medical tourism, the country is well-positioned to become a tourism powerhouse in Asia.

The Philippines has 23 health facilities that are accredited and recognized by the International Society for Quality in Health Care, and medical treatment is considerably cheaper than in Gulf countries, Europe, or the EU. The country’s medical tourism appeal is also strengthened by a culture of medical travel, which is prevalent in the Middle East. The many Philippine expats working in the region, particularly in hospitals and clinics, are another advantage that the country has when it comes to promoting medical tourism.

To further strengthen the Philippines’ position as a health and wellness tourism hub in Asia, the Department of Tourism has partnered with Dubai-based Agora Group for next month’s International Health and Wellness Tourism Congress in Germany. By prioritizing medical tourism as a “marketable product,” the country hopes to attract more visitors and make the most of the opportunities presented by this growing sector. With the people, facilities, and policies in place to support medical tourism, the Philippines is well on its way to becoming a major player in the industry.
