For many years, South Korea was known around the world for selling cars, ships, and electronics. Later, things like K-pop, TV dramas, and Korean food also became very popular and brought many visitors to the country.

Plastic surgery has also been a major draw for years—and now, that demand is growing even more. In 2023, over 114,000 people from other countries came to Seoul to get cosmetic surgery. One of them was Nguyen Thi Huyen, a 26-year-old woman from Vietnam. She works in marketing and came to Seoul to change the shape of her face. She had surgery to make her jawline smaller, including work on her cheekbones, jaw, and chin. She also said that many of her friends from Vietnam had come to Seoul for the same reason.

“To us, Korea has always been known for plastic surgery,” Nguyen said. “Now, many young women in Vietnam, especially those in their 20s, talk online about wanting to look like K-pop stars like Jang Won-young or Karina.”

Nguyen is just one of many people doing this. In fact, South Korea had its highest number of foreign medical visitors last year. About 1.17 million people traveled to Korea in 2023 for health and beauty treatments, according to the Korean Ministry of Health and Welfare.
